Dominoes, 42, Shoot-the-Moon They're Not Just For Texans Anymore! 42 used to be called Texas 4-Hand in the region of Texas and the surrounding states. You will hear it called Texas42 nowadays. It was invented less than 60 miles from Ft. Worth just before 1890. It was invented because of a moral ban against playing cards during that era. There were state blue-laws banning cards on trains and in most public places then so 42, Shoot-the-Moon (usually called "Moon"), and other bidding/trick-taking games that were card games using domino tiles instead of playing cards became wide spread along with playing Dominoes matching games. Conjectures made that Moon is an off-shoot game to be able to play a three-handed version of 42 are unsubstantiated. The games are similar in play, but bidding is different and the deck of dominoes to play Moon is different. Indeed, Moon may have been played before 42 was invented. The important thing is that Moon & 42 are stand out games. The players that love them are steadfast in their admiration of the games. It takes maybe an hour or two to learn to play. One can get very good at the games in a matter of days and can master them in as little as a few weeks. But a lifetime to enjoy them is not nearly enough. That's why that in the nicest parts of Heaven they have put up Dominoes, Moon, n 42 tables!
